Apple has just unveiled the latest versions of its operating systems for iPhones and iPads, namely iOS 16.5.1 and iPadOS 16.5.1. This update not only brings some exciting new features but also addresses some important security concerns. In a recent announcement, Apple highlighted three zero-day vulnerabilities that have been exploited by hackers targeting iPhone users through the iMessage app.
To tackle these issues, Apple urges all iPhone users to update to the latest iOS 16.5.1 version, which was made available to the public on Wednesday. However, it’s not just iPhone users who need to take action. iPad users also have their own update, iPadOS 16.5.1, which weighs in at around 140MB.
Apple emphasizes that this update contains crucial security fixes and strongly recommends that all users install it. The same applies to iPhone users who should update to iOS 16.5.1. According to reports, two of the vulnerabilities were discovered by researchers at Kaspersky, who provided details about a spyware that exploits the iOS vulnerability to gain unauthorized access to devices. The third vulnerability is credited to an unknown researcher.
Although iOS 16 is compatible with a range of iPhones, including the popular iPhone XR, these vulnerabilities serve as a reminder that even older iPhone models are susceptible to such threats. Therefore, it is imperative that anyone using older iPhone models updates their devices immediately.
Interestingly, the WebKit issue has also impacted Mac users. Apple has responded by releasing version updates for macOS Ventura (13.4.1), Monterey (12.6.7), and Big Sur (11.7.8). To download the update, simply navigate to the Settings of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, select the software tab, and install the new version. You’ll need to provide your passcode for authorization and restart your device.
